Science Fiction & Fantasy What our nightmares have accustomed us to see in dreams, Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange shows us in broad daylight.
Released in late 1971 (within weeks of Sam Peckinpah's brutally violent Straw Dogs), the film sparked considerable controversy in the U.S. with its X-rated violence; after copycat crimes in England, Kubrick withdrew the film from British distribution until after his death. Mystery & Suspense, Kubrick's vision is a thing to behold; whether or not it's an actual masterpiece is still up for debate. Oh, and it's pretty dark and haunting.

Alex is the leader of a street gang of teenage brutes who specialize in ultra-violence, including beating up an elderly vagrant after getting high on drugs, home invasions, rape and a murder after Alex bludgeoned a victim in the head.The murder charge gets Alex locked up and undergoes a radical and controversial psychological treatment called the Ludovico technique meant to give him an aversion to violence and sex to see if he could be granted an early release from the crowded prison system.Alex is drugged, strapped to a chair, his eyes propped open and forced to watch acts of violence.
