Within this volume, Johns manages to explain away most of the temporal inconsistencies in the DC continuity, weave in a metatextual story akin to Black Freighter, 'repair' the New 52 without having to delete it from existence, offer up some insight and parallels to our current world situation, give plenty of characters some 'screen time', even give the world of Watchmen itself a potentially bright and interesting future.
This is a very ambitious story, which I suppose it would have to be if you're combining the Watchmen Universe with the DC Universe. Johns and Frank put the weight of both the regular DC universe and the Watchmen universe on their shoulders. He worked with Richard Donner for four years, leaving the company to pursue writing full-time. There's so many angles to this story, it will require multiple readings to pickup on all of it just like Watchmen did years ago. A loose animated film adaptation, Superman: Doomsday, was released in 2007. There will be those who worship at the altar of Alan Moore who will decry and moan people touching their beloved bible of Watchmen.Is there a lot wrong with this series, in addition to all the delays in between release of the individual issues-yes. There's really no way to explain this story in a review but I will say when it's all said and done it looks like the DCU is back like it was before the New 52? It pays tribute to the history of comics, and DCs godfather, Superman.
